Redd, also known as Crazy Redd, is a recurring character in the Animal Crossing series. He is an untrustworthy fox (kitsune in the Japanese versions) who runs an illicit furniture shop, where he sells fake paintings and expensive items. Certain items he sells are considered "special" items, given that they have a rating bonus from the Academy of Decorative Arts.

His name is derived directly from "red," due to being a red fox.

Appearance

Redd has orange fur and pointy pink ears, his eyes are slanted, and his snout is a darker brown. He wears a blue apron with his trademark, a sort of white ginkgo leaf, from the waist down. It's similar to Tom Nook's old apron, but with his leaf instead of the symbol on the piece of furniture. In the first Animal Crossing, Redd's apron has a "B" (referring to "Black Market").

Personality

He has a sneaky, sly, cunning, and sarcastic personality. When the player leaves his shop without buying anything, he will say "thank you very much..." in a sarcastic manner. However, if the player buys something, he will give them a sincere thank you. He is believed to be 35 years old in Wild World , as two passwords indicate him to be that age.

He considers Tom Nook as his competition, referring to him as "that raccoon in an apron."

History

Animal Crossing series

Dōbutsu no Mori / Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing artwork

In Animal Crossing, Redd owns a tent suspiciously labeled "Black Market," but with the "black" crossed out in red marker, but the shop itself is titled Crazy Redd's Furniture Emporium. When Redd appears in town, he sends a letter to the player stating the date that he will arrive, and on that date, the player has to wander around town until they find Redd in a random location. Redd sells paintings on occasion.

Ladino also has a stand during the Fireworks Festival, where he sells novelty items such as balloons, pinwheels, and fans.

Animal Crossing: Wild World

Animal Crossing: Wild World artwork

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Redd sets up a tent outside the town hall once a week on a specific day of the week, which the player can choose by talking to Lyle. On this date, Booker will inform the player about Redd's arrival. On the first day of his arrival, the player will not know the password required to enter, and will have to ask the villagers for it. A random villager (not necessarily the closest friend of the player) will have the password. After reciting the password correctly to Redd, the tent will open and allow the player in. The player will then be asked to pay 3,000 Bells to use his store. If they do not agree to this, the player will not be allowed to purchase anything and will have to inquire with the villagers next week for another password.

Once the player becomes a member of his "family," Redd will send them a weekly letter, received on the day before he arrives, with a new password.

Redd once again sells (sometimes exclusive) furniture and paintings, but paintings may be fake, which is only revealed when the player tries to donate one to the museum or sell one to Tom Nook. Redd's prices are twice as much as Tom Nook's in this game.

Redd appears to be in cahoots with Lyle the insurance salesman - they work together to try and scam as much money out of players as possible. After the player speaks to Lyle about Redd, Redd somehow knows the day of the week when he should come to the town, which matches with the day the player selected when talking to Lyle.

Animal Crossing: City Folk

Artwork for Animal Crossing: City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, Redd owns a small shop on the left of the city, in what villagers call a "dark alley." A villager may ask the player if they wish to become a member of Redd's store. If they accept, the villager will mail the player an invitation, which will arrive in their mailbox the next day. After this is obtained, players can enter Crazy Redd's. A membership fee of 3,000 Bells is required before purchasing any items. This event occurs only after the player unsuccessfully attempts to enter Crazy Redd's in the city.

Players will also receive one invitation after each purchase at Redd's store. This can then be sent to other players who can redeem it for access. In return, Redd will give the sender 1,000 Bells.

Redd appears to have no connection with Lyle, who now runs the Happy Room Academy HQ in the city. Therefore, insurance does not exist and any forgeries cannot be refunded at all.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Redd returns to the peddler business in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. He sets up his shop, Redd's Gallery, in the plaza on a random day of the week. He specializes in the art department, selling only paintings and the newly added statues. Unlike statues, some paintings are always genuine, but most are likely fakes. However, fakes now have noticeable aesthetic differences from the real thing, so they are not based on luck. Fake versions of normal items are a separate collectible. His shop operates on a "one per day" policy, where he only allows customers to purchase one item per day. To prevent loopholes, any item purchased from Redd's Gallery in one town counts in all others, thus ensuring that only one player can buy one item from him each day. He also sends purchases to the player's mailbox the next day, rather than making purchases directly to the player (marking an acquired piece of art with a special note). He also appears on New Year's Eve and the Fireworks Show in the plaza, where he sells hats for 300 bells on the former and fortune cookies for 500 bells on the latter.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Although initially absent in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Redd, now referred to as "Jolly Redd," was added in the 1.2.0 update with the museum art gallery. After the player has donated at least 60 items to the museum, Redd docks on the player's island in a small boat called Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler on the small "secret" beach on the northern shore of the island. Redd once again sells artwork of dubious origin, along with other items.

When Redd first visits, Isabelle announces his arrival to the island. During this visit, the Treasure Trawler docks on the small northern beach of the player's island, except it is closed, and Redd is wandering around the player's island. When spoken to, Redd introduces himself to the player and gives them a painting, first attempting a price of 498,000 bells before reconsidering a one percent discount. The first painting sold by Redd is always genuine, and when the player shows the painting to Blathers, he accepts the donation and can expand the museum to include the art gallery, closing the museum for construction the next day.

When the museum is expanded, Redd makes a second visit, this time outside the Resident Services. When spoken to, Redd mentions that he is very interested in the island and that he loves it. He will then return to his Treasure Trawler, and Isabelle continues to announce each time Redd visits the island.

Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori

Redd appears in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori. He nearly tricks and Alfonso into buying a fake Golden Slingshot during the Fireworks Show by charging them 3,500 bells, insisting that it is one-of-a-kind, when Redd actually has a case full of them in his shop.
