Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズDX Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Derakkusu lit. Big Brother Thunder Battle Deluxe), commonly shortened to SSBM or Melee, is a fighting game for the Nintendo GameCube home console. It is the second game in the series. Like the previous game, this video game consists of a crossover between several Nintendo characters, where they battle in different scenarios to see who is the best. The gameplay is very similar to the previous game, but several improvements have been added. New game modes have also been added, such as Adventure Mode (SSBM), a remake of the 1P Game mode from the first game, and All-Star Mode, among others.
Game Modes
1P Mode
Regular Match
Classic
Template:AP Here, the player can choose any character available, and must overcome 11 challenges, 8 of which will be battles against rivals.
You can choose the difficulty level: Very Easy - Easy - Normal - Hard - Very Hard. You can also choose the number of lives you have, from 1 to 5 lives.
The order of battles against opponents will not always be the same. The three remaining events are "minigames," which are: Break the Targets!, Get the Trophies!, and Race to the Finish!.
After completing the entire mode, the player will face Master Hand, and if the mode is completed on Normal, Hard, or Very Hard difficulty with 3 or more lives and without continuing, Crazy Hand will appear.
Adventure
Template:AP In this game mode, like the previous one, the player can select a character from the available modes, as well as the difficulty level and lives. They must then complete the 12 stages inspired by the different universes of the characters in this video game.
In some stages, such as the Mushroom Kingdom, the player will have to travel through worlds inspired by the original Nintendo games, but in others, such as Green Greens, the player will have to fight in a battle with certain special conditions.
Unlike Classic Mode, the levels in this game mode are all the same for any character. The Adventure Mode stages are as follows:
- Mushroom Kingdom
- Kongo Jungle
- Underground Labyrinth
- Brinstar
- Green Greens
- Corneria
- Pokémon Stadium
- F-Zero Grand Prix
- Onett
- Icicle Mountain
- Battlefield
- Final Destination
If the player manages to complete the Final Destination stage on Normal, Hard, or Very Hard difficulty with a total playtime under 18 minutes, they will face Giga Bowser. If you manage to defeat him, you will obtain the bonus KO Giga Bowser (+100,000 points); if you defeat him without continuing, you will obtain his trophy.
All-Star
Template:AP This game mode will appear once all the characters in the game have been unlocked.
Here, upon choosing a character, the player will face a random enemy and will only have one life. After finishing the first battle, the character will be sent to a room without enemies where they can rest. There will be three heart containers, which will be the only three recovery items that can be used in this mode. A screen will also appear showing the enemy(s) for the next battle, which will always be chosen randomly, except for the last one, which will always be 25 Mr. Game & Watch.
Event Match
Template:AP In this game mode, certain tests must be completed. The player will have to choose an event from the list and complete it. The characters that can be used in each event depend on the event itself: while most events allow you to use a character of your choice, some events have a predefined character.
Events will be unlocked as the available ones are completed. Initially, the number of events only reaches 30. This increases to 39 after unlocking certain characters (Jigglypuff, Luigi, Dr. Mario, Falco, and Young Link), and increases again to 50 after unlocking all characters and completing these new events. The final event of the game (51) will appear when the previous 50 are completed.
Once all events have been completed, and if all secret stages have been unlocked, the Sound Test will appear in the options menu.
Stadium Mode
This is a game mode where you can complete various tests. As you complete the various modes, you'll unlock things like trophies and even some stages.
Target Test
Template:AP In this mode, you must destroy a certain number of targets (10). Each character uses a different stage.
Home-Run Contest
Template:AP In this mode, the objective is to throw the sack as far as possible in less than 10 seconds. To do this, you must hit the sack several times to increase the damage percentage, but be careful not to knock it off the platform too soon. Once he's up, you have to hit him with a "Smash Attack" type hit with the bat. The higher the percentage, the further he'll be thrown.
Multi-Man Melee
Template:AP Within this game mode, there are several sections where you can perform different tests against the 3D Fighting Models, and some of them must be completed to unlock game content.
- 10 Man Melee
- This consists of defeating 10 enemies in the shortest possible time.
- 100 Man Melee
- This is the same as the previous test, but this time against 100 enemies. After completing this test for the first time with any character, Falco will appear, and you must defeat him to unlock him.
- 3 Minute Melee
- This consists of defeating as many enemies as possible in 3 minutes.
- 15 Minute Melee
- This is the same as the previous test, but now with 15 minutes.
- Endless Melee
- This is an endless battle in which you face several enemies until you are defeated.
- Cruel Melee
- This is the same as the previous test but with a much higher difficulty level and without items.
Training Mode
Template:AP This mode is only for practicing or performing combos. Performing an average of 15 combos will earn you a trophy.
When entering this game mode, you choose your character and stage. By pressing the Start button, the player will find several options:
- Speed: To modify the speed. You can choose between 1/4, 1/2, 2/3, x1, x1.5, x2.
- Item: You can choose between several items to practice with.

Melee
This is a multiplayer mode with various game options, where one to four players can play.
Tournament Melee
Up to 64 players can participate in this game mode. The first thing to do is configure the options. The game is played in a knockout phase, meaning you have to defeat your opponents until someone reaches the final.
Special Melee
Template:AP Multiplayer can be played in several different ways, including:
- Camera Melee
- In this mode, the first thing you need to do is place a controller in position 4. Then, you need to select two (or three) characters to fight and a stage. Within that stage, the fourth player can take photos that will be saved to the Memory Card and then viewed in the Snapshot section of the Data menu.
- Stamina Melee
- In this game mode, all players start with 150 health points. The objective is to damage the opponent until their health points are subtracted. Players only have one life, and the winner is the player who manages to reduce the opponent's score to 0.
- Super Sudden Death
- All players start with the damage counter at 300%. This means that almost any hit knocks out an opponent.
Giant Melee
- Players in this fight are gigantic.
Tiny Melee
- All characters appear small.
Invisible Melee
- All characters become invisible, just like when using the Cloaking Device item. However, unlike the item's effect, characters do take damage.
Fixed-Camera Mode
- The camera remains fixed, so the entire stage is visible, but from a distance.
Single-Button Mode
- Only the movement stick, the A button, and the C stick can be used here.
Lightning Melee
- All players move at high speed.
Slo-Mo Melee
- Characters move very slowly.

- Pause (Pause): Toggles pause during gameplay.
- Self-Destruction (Self-Destruction): Toggles the number of points lost when you fall. The default is -1, and can be changed to two (-2) or zero (0) instead of one life lost.
Name Registration
Template:AP In this option, the player can enter a name. Each time the player fights, pressing the A button on the character's name will allow the player to change the character's name once selected.
Trophies
Template:AP Throughout the game, you'll earn coins that can be spent at a Trophy machine for your collection. You'll also earn trophies directly as you progress through the game.
Collection
A room will appear with a table displaying all the trophies you've earned. The more trophies you have, the larger the room becomes, and the more details appear.
Data
- Snapshots: This option allows you to view photos taken in Camera Mode of Special Melee.
- Files: Within this section, the player will see an intro to the game and an explanation of how to play.
- Melee Records: The player will be able to view all the records achieved in the game.
- Special: In this section, the player will see the date and time they unlocked the special features in the game.
Characters
This installment features 26 selectable characters: 15 starter characters and 11 secret characters. In addition to the 12 characters from the previous game, several more have been added, such as Peach and Mewtwo, who were originally planned to appear in the previous game, but were unable to be added due to time constraints.
Stages
Initials
Stage | Thumbnail | Universe | Description | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mushroom Kingdom: Peach's Castle | Based on the castle from Super Mario 64, buttons of three different colors (red, blue, or green) can appear in this stage, which make platforms or blocks containing objects appear. Occasionally, a Banzai Bill may land on the stage and then crash into the center, causing a huge explosion. | ||||||||||
Mushroom Kingdom: Rainbow Ride | This cruise-like stage consists of a boat that travels through the air until it reaches a series of fixed platforms, falling platforms, flying carpets, and pendulums. Several elements of this stage are based on Super Mario Bros. 3. | ||||||||||
Mushroom: Mushroom Kingdom | A stage reminiscent of the different levels of Super Mario Bros. This stage has the blocks from the aforementioned game as platforms, including those with coins, which, in Melee, contain items. It also has platforms that fall if a character stands on them, which can be very dangerous. | ||||||||||
Kong Island: Kongo Jungle | This stage appears to be a raft stuck on the edge of a waterfall. It consists of a base with four traversable platforms above it. Occasionally, Klaptraps may appear and hit characters. Logs may also come down the stream and serve as platforms. There is also a Barrel Cannon at the bottom to help characters return to the stage. |- | Kong Island: Joky Jungle | In this stage, you can see a hut in the center, and in front of it, a platform, which is below a smaller one. On the sides, separated from the central one, there are two simple, solid platforms. The most interesting thing about this stage is that underneath it is a very strong stream of water that quickly drags the characters along. From time to time, a Klaptrap may appear, which performs a very strong Meteoric Smash. |- | Yoshi's Island: Yoshi's Island | A stage based on the early levels of Super Mario World, as seen by the blocks and pipes. The stage features a large, sloping platform on the right that can stop opponents' attacks by sending them flying. It also has three blocks in the middle, which, if hit, allow you to pass through them, potentially causing an accidental K.O.. | ||||||
Yoshi's Island: Yoshi's Story | This stage, based directly on Yoshi's Story, has many elements that resemble paper and fabric. Several elements from the aforementioned game can be seen, including Fly Guys that drop food when hit, a Pak I. Dermo that is only there for decoration, and a cloud of Lakitu that acts as a very small, moving platform. |- | Hyrule: Temple | A stage representing the Temples from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, showing a large ruined temple. This stage is the largest in the game, consisting of a large platform on the left and another on the right, plus one below, which can be used to avoid combat. | ||||||||
End: Great Bay | A stage that is over a large lake. The Bay is the main platform, and a turtle, which is a temporary platform. Tingle also appears in this stage, flying in his balloon, which can be popped, acting as a small temporary platform. In the background, you can see the Moon, an enemy from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, being stopped by the Four Giants. | ||||||||||
Dream Land: Green Greens | A stage based on the first stage of Kirby's Dream Land. It has a main platform with two on the sides. In the background is Whispy Woods, who will launch a gust of wind that can slightly move the character. Occasionally, apples will drop, which can be eaten or used as a weapon. | ||||||||||
Dream Land: Dream Fountain | Based on the Dream Fountain from Kirby's Adventure. It resembles a large fountain with three platforms on it. | ||||||||||
Kanto: Pokémon Stadium | - | Planet Zebes: Brinstar | - | Lylat System: Corneria | Based on the Great Fox, the mothership of the Star Fox Team. It is a fairly large stage which can be bombarded by several Arwings during combat. At the bottom you can see two small cannons that can serve as a platform for the player but can also cause a strong blow when fired, possibly causing an K.O. instant | ||||||
Lylat System: Venom | The same ship that appears in Corneria, only seen from a different angle. This time the stage will be the wings and not the ship itself. Like Corneria, it can be bombed by Arwings. In the background is Venom, one of the nine planets in the Lylat System, where the Star Fox games take place. | ||||||||||
F-Zero Grand Prix: Mute City Circuit | The stage is based on the track of the same name from F-Zero. Combat takes place on a platform that carries the characters around the circuit. At certain points, the platform will stop and the players will be left on the track, where they can be run over by cars. If someone touches the track while the platform is moving, they will take damage. | ||||||||||
Eagleland: Onett | Ness's hometown in EarthBound. The houses and trees in the area serve as platforms. Occasionally, cars will drive by and can run over characters if they are on the ground. | ||||||||||
Icicle Mountain | A stage consisting of a mountain. It has no end and will continue to rise for the duration of the battle. If players don't move with the screen, they will be KO'd. The stage is based on the mechanics of the Ice Climbers games. |
Unlockables
Stage | Thumbnail | Universe | Description | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mushroom: Mushroom Kingdom II | It is based on Subcom, the location where Super Mario Bros. 2 takes place. The stage has three platforms, the middle one being the lowest. Occasionally, Birdo will appear throwing eggs or Pidgit, which will serve as a platform while moving around the stage. | ||||||||||
Kanto Sky: Poké Balloons | - | Planet Zebes: Brinstar Abyss | A circular stage floating over a lava field. Based on the "Metroid" games, Kraid will occasionally hit the stage, changing the players' terrain. The lava in the background will not do any damage. | ||||||||
F-Zero Grand Prix: Big Blue Circuit | A moving stage based on one of the most important stages in F-Zero, Big Blue. Players will start in the Falcon Flyer and more cars will gradually appear below, serving as temporary platforms. If the player falls onto the track, they will quickly move to the left, easily causing a KO. | ||||||||||
Eagleland: Fourside | The stage has three main platforms, each shaped like a skyscraper. At the top, a UFO sometimes appears, which players can ride. This UFO has a slippery floor and will fly away after a while. The stage is based on the city of the same name that Ness visits in EarthBound. | ||||||||||
Flatbed World: Flatbed Zone | - | Special Levels: Battleground | - | Special Stages: Final Destination | The stage where the Master Hand battle takes place. It has a simple, flat shape with a background that changes over time. |
